Massanutten Resort sits in the center of one of the most historic countrysides in the nation. The site of much of the Civil War, the areas around Massanutten will entice every history lover. Roadside markers and small monuments dot the landscape pointing out the valley’s history. History is also played out in battlefield reenactments and is re-created in homes preserved for their history and open to visitors. Of note is the Daniel Harrison house in Bridgewater. The Miller-Kite house in Elkton, which was a headquarters for Stonewall Jackson, and the Hardesty-Harrison house in downtown Harrisonburg, which also houses a museum and travel information. The Massanutten area also features history underground. The famed Grand Caverns in Grottoes, 15 minutes from Massanutten, was a favorite spot of Civil War soldiers, both Yankee and Confederate. Some 230 verified signatures of soldiers decorate the interior cavern walls.
